SharpCuts Closes with second successful Blended Challenge

There were 10 teams from high schools across southern Ontario, and they all worked diligently for a two week period to seamlessly combine three film genres into one cohesive 5-minute film. The rest, as they say, is history. After a quick conference by the judges and all the addition of the viewer’s choice ballots, the winners were decided:

1st Place

Defending champions Red Hat Studios/Chilly Prod. and Max from Guelph C.V.I. – Guelph
Team Members: Alix Vander Vlugt, Max Bowman, Jordan Milley, Cassidy Chambers

2nd Place (tie)

Spartan Productions from Centennial C.V.I. – Guelph

Despite the packed day of events at the Bookshelf, many of the festival’s familiar faces came out to raise a toast to the festival and see who won the prizes at the SharpCuts Gala and Scmoozefest. Below are some of the pictures from the night.

Science, Dramas and Docs Win the Day

The SharpCuts Saturday Program at the Bookshelf Cinema was a splendid day of discussion and thought-provoking films. The afternoon began with ScienceCuts, an outstanding discussion of the role of science in film featuring top scientists from the University of Guelph and local artists.

Melanie Wills, U of G doctoral candidate and SharpCuts programmer, led the discussion panel which included Doug Larson, a retired U of G prof and Kid Coma band leader.

Nearly immediately following the ScienceCuts panel, the afternoon’s films began with the Drama program, which was followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.

Then the documentaries rolled. This year SharpCuts featured an impressive slate of local docs, and a huge crowd at the Bookshelf came out to support them

Freestyle Friday Brings Huge Crowd

Freestyle Friday at SharpCuts brought the latest edition of the Guelph Improvised Music Series. Despite the rather *ahem* unseasonable weather, the crowds came out to check out the sounds of Alex Samaras and Fossils. This made three for three in terms of standing room only attendance at the SharpCuts Festival this year and generated a lot of positive energy heading into the weekend program.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we were unable to screen Adam Green’s FROZEN at the Thursday Night Thriller.

HOWEVER, to rectify this, we will be now screening a 35 mm print of the film immediately following the Blended Film Challenge Sunday afternoon.

FROZEN will screen at approximently 4:20 at the Galaxy Cinemas Guelph. Look for the SharpCuts booth in the lobby.

SharpCuts Opens Big with Lots of Laughs
